Project Description:

This project involved the complete reconstruction of failing heritage masonry portals at both entrances to the tunnel. Situated within a sensitive environment in Parks Canada and adjacent to a creek, the work presented challenges such as heavy traffic on Highway 93S and stringent environmental protections. The scope included designing and engineering a robust scaffolding system to support the masonry work while ensuring ongoing traffic was fully protected from falling rocks. A structural temporary support system for the masonry arch was also engineered.

The intricate restoration process required marking and documenting the schematic and style of the masonry on the portals and wing walls. Each stone was carefully removed section by section, its location noted, and the structure was entirely rebuilt using the original patterns and techniques with modern adaptations. A new anchoring system and a heritage grouting method were incorporated to enhance durability while maintaining historical integrity. The project also included concrete repairs to the tunnel's ceiling, walls, and curbs.

The rehabilitation was completed without any incidents or accidents, demonstrating SVEMY’s commitment to prioritizing safety and minimizing risks while maintaining operational efficiency. This successful execution upheld the project's heritage value and met Parks Canada's high standards for environmental and structural stewardship.
